Composting your coffee grounds is a great way to recycle this organic resource. Coffee grounds will help add nitrogen to your compost pile, it is considered green compost material and needs to be balanced with additional brown material such as shredded paper or dry leaves. Your coffee filters can be composted as well as a carbon source, just tear into small pieces to speed up decomposition. Using coffee grounds as fertilizer adds organic material to the soil which improves drainage, water retention and aeration. They also encourage the growth of microorganisms beneficial to plant growth.

Spread the coffee directly onto the soil and cover with leaves, compost, or mulch. When adding to your compost pile use a third leaves, a third of fresh grass clippings, and a third coffee grounds. The great thing about coffee grounds is that they do not go bad so you can store them in a container near your compost bin/pile.

10.27.20 - Okaloosa County October 27 Covid Update

Data Sourced by Okaloosa County Public Safety From Florida Department of Health* at

ℹ️ floridahealthcovid19.gov/ & okaloosa.floridahealth.gov/

ℹ️ Dashboard at http://bit.ly/2RZioKNDOHDashboard

ℹ️ More resources at myokaloosa.com/bcc/covid-19

*Notes from Public Safety: You will notice a difference in the reporting on the COVID testing data. This is due to a change in the Florida Department of Health (DOH) dashboard whereas previously the total testing numbers since the event began were displayed and reported on our form. Now, only Florida Resident data from individual dates is displayed at the state and county level, requiring the same to be reported on our covid graphic, for consistency. Similarly, the total percent positive is no longer displayed, replaced by a daily positivity. The DOH Dashboard has had several facelifts throughout the reporting process, so it is not surprising to see.

10.27.20 Tropical Update 🌀 Overview of Okaloosa County Public Safety's Zeta call with National Weather Service: ⚠️We are under a Tropical Storm Warning. Continue Monitoring at nhc.noaa.gov/. Further Tropical Updates will be housed at myokaloosa.com/eoc/home Zeta is still currently a Tropical Storm after interaction with the Yucatan but will regain hurricane strength today, and likely be a minimal hurricane at landfall in SE Louisiana Wednesday evening. The system should be traveling very quickly at landfall, estimated 25 MPH to the NE, limiting the rainfall it can drop in our area. We expect the system to be at Tropical Storm strength when it is closest to us. Hurricane conditions are not expected here. • Zeta’s wind field has expanded and interaction with the upper level portion of Winter Storm Billy will allow greater penetration of tropical storm force winds (mainly in gusts) well in-land • Okaloosa County could see sustained minimal tropical storm force winds (40MPH-ish) along the coast beginning around 7PM, with gusts in-land. Higher gusts may occur later in the evening as the storm draws closer to our area. Areas weakened by Sally could see downed trees, powerlines, power outages, etc. A few brief tornadoes can’t be ruled out and can be rain-wrapped. • T/S wind probabilities about 45% Crestview, 42% Destin, Strong T/S winds (58-73 MPH) 7% Crestview, 5% Destin, Hurricane winds 1% all, Time frame of T/S wind arrival- possible gusts on Wed afternoon, with bulk of any sustained winds and worst weather about 7PM Wednesday to 3AM Thursday. These are best estimates based on current information, so changes may occur and timing may change. • We are not in a Storm Surge Warning zone currently, but have a coastal Flood Advisory of 1-3 feet. We are in a neap-tide cycle so high/low tides will not affect water levels much. • Surf of 10-15 feet is predicted throughout the area, mainly Wednesday afternoon though Thursday morning. • Rainfall of .5”-1.5” is predicted with some localized higher amounts in areas where thunderstorms train. River gauges show nothing beyond Action Stage at this point. ⚠️ An Everbridge Alert for Tropical Storm conditions will deploy today. We have already declared a Local State of Emergency and our EOC is dual-activated at a Modified Level 2 Remote for COVID and Zeta. An expanded IMT (Incident Management Team) and IAP (Incident Action Plan) is being finalized. Although we do not expect devastating impact here in Okaloosa County, we feel it prudent to be well-prepared. Chief Schwartz will be reaching out to notify involved personnel for the Ops Meeting. 📍 Sandbags and sand have been available since the weekend at 2 locations 24/7 for citizens to fill on their own, free of charge: •1759 S Ferdon Blvd, Crestview – In the Public Works Yard along Goodwin Ave. •710 Essex Rd, Ft. Walton Beach – outside the fence in the turn-around area.

Natural fiber clothing is created from naturally occurring fibers of plants and animals. Some examples of these fabrics include linen, cotton, wool, silk, and jute. These fabrics are environmentally sustainable and majority are biodegradable, durable, and naturally repellent to mold and dirt. This makes these pieces of clothing easy to recycle and can be reused without harming the environment. Synthetic fibers are made of synthetic materials which are usually formed through a chemical process. These fibers are cheaper and easily produced but are contributing a large amount of chemicals, waste, and carbon emissions into the environment. By switching to natural fibers, we can reduce the negative impact clothing has on the environment.

9.25.20 - Florida Enters Phase 3 as Governor DeSantis signs executive order 20-244, taking effect immediately. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Removes state-level restrictions on businesses, such as restaurants.

  2. Provides that no COVID-19 emergency ordinance may prevent an individual from working or operating a business, giving Floridians and business owners needed certainty and the ability to provide for themselves and their families.

  3. Provides that restaurants may not be limited by a COVID-19 emergency order by any local government to less than 50% of their indoor capacity. If a restaurant is limited to less than 100% of its indoor capacity, such COVID-19 emergency order must satisfy the following:

    1. Quantify the economic impact of each limitation or requirements on those restaurants; and

    2. Explain why each limitation or requirement is necessary for public health.

  4. 4. Suspends all outstanding fines and penalties, and the collection of such moving forward, applied against individuals related to COVID-19. Click HERE for a link to the full order.

9.25.20

1. Refuse

Be mindful of the items you purchase because each one has an environmental impact. Incorporating reusable alternatives and saying no to single use items are two ways to start.

2. Reduce

Reduce your general consumption by being mindful of what you need and want. Check the quality of the item, a higher quality item will not have to be replaced as often. Also use the minimum amount required to avoid unnecessary waste disposal.

3. Reuse

Before tossing an item ask yourself if it can be used for something else or repaired. Selling, donating, and buying secondhand are all great options.

4. Recycle

Make sure to clean and properly recycle any items left after following the previous steps. Visit our website for more information.

http://myokaloosa.com/pw/environmental/recycling

5. Rot

Take any extra food scraps to your own composting bin or a space in your backyard dedicated to this. Visit our previous blog post on composting.

💬 There were several days that we did not provide updated COVID numbers, during which we were fully engaged in the mitigation and response efforts for Hurricane Sally. Now that we have transitioned to Recovery we are able to re-dedicate time to reporting on this as well. Public Safety Director, Patrick Maddox worked hard to uncover the previous day's data to give you increases and decreases in fields where that information was available. For fields in which that information was not available, you will see a “+/-“ icon. We will begin updating those fields with tomorrow’s data. You will notice an additional 5 deaths reported on this update, several of which were delayed in reporting.
